Google Ads for home service businesses
Your business runs on the phone. Google only learns from what it can see — and by default, it cannot see a phone call.
What a click actually costs
Top-of-page bid ranges from the Google Ads Keyword Planner, United States, pulled September 2026. Emergency terms cost the most because the job is booked the same day — which is also why losing the call to untracked attribution hurts most there.
| Search | Monthly | Low | Top of page |
|---|---|---|---|
| emergency plumber | 60,500 | $18 | $86 |
| water damage restoration | 135,000 | $17 | $84 |
| ac repair near me | 201,000 | $9 | $71 |
| hvac repair | 60,500 | $10 | $68 |
| garage door repair | 246,000 | $15 | $67 |
| sewer line repair | 14,800 | $9 | $63 |
| roof replacement | 33,100 | $12 | $59 |
| furnace repair | 201,000 | $8 | $51 |
| roof leak repair | 33,100 | $10 | $51 |
| electrician near me | 368,000 | $5 | $44 |
Where it breaks
The call nobody counts
Home services is a phone business. Somebody’s AC dies on a Saturday, they search, they tap the number. That tap is the job.
Unless call tracking is wired in, Google never finds out that call happened. It only learns from form fills — which for most contractors are the smaller half of the leads, and usually the less urgent half.
So the platform optimizes toward the keywords that produce forms, and quietly starves the ones that make the phone ring. The account looks like it is working. The truck is not any busier.
I run Google Ads for home service businesses in the US. When I scanned contractors in Florida who are actively advertising, the same defect came back on nearly every one: a clickable phone number on every page, real money going into clicks, and no call tracking behind it.
Frequently asked questions
Why do emergency terms cost so much?
Because they convert same day. "Emergency plumber" reaches $86 per click at top of page in the US because whoever types it is booking someone within the hour. The price reflects how close that search sits to a paid job.
How do I know if my calls are tracked?
Load your own site and look at the phone number. If it is the same number printed on your truck, the calls are almost certainly not attributed. Call tracking swaps in a forwarding number per visitor, which is what lets the call be traced back to the keyword.
Will call tracking hurt my local SEO?
Not if it is set up properly. The tracking number is swapped in by script for ad visitors while your real number stays in the HTML and in your Google Business Profile, which is what local rankings read.
Is this worth it if I only spend a few thousand a month?
That is exactly the range where it matters most. At $50 to $86 a click, a few thousand a month is a few dozen clicks. Getting the wrong half of them is the difference between a busy month and a slow one.
What is the first step?
Run the free scan on your site. It reads your pages the way an ad click arrives and tells you whether the call and the click ID survive. No account access needed.
